Cover and Contents Page Drawings

I think that the key to making a successful cover for the pop magazine would be to follow the general convention of making the magazine cover look quite full. I wasn't able to express this through my drawings, however, the magazine cover should also include a variety of bright and bold colours so that it would suit the genre of the magazine well. In terms of the contents page, my plan for the contents turned out slightly boxy. Possibly because I separated the key sectors of the contents page. Within my draft I will try to emphasise the imaging and colours more, keeping in mind that the different sections should be brought together more in terms of the layout.

Unedited Pictures for Front Cover and Contents Page
These are a couple of images that I have taken that could be used either within my front cover or contents page. This image perfectly portrays the happy nature or a pop magazine, the model is facing the camera and is clearly smiling. I am not completely certain in using this image on the front cover because the model is not centred in the image like in most front covers. In any case, the background can be covered with the headlines and the masthead of the front cover. However, as a personal opinion, I would say if this image is used, it would be the most suitable on a contents page.
Like I have mentioned, in the previous image, the problem was that the model was not centred on the picture. This seems to be a better version for a front cover, as the image concentrates more on the model rather than the background. If I would still need to concentrate on the model, I would be able to crop the image as an improvement. The only possible issue with this image would be that it does not follow the convention of the model being in a mid shot like on most front covers. However it can always be used as a sub image or on the contents page.
I would say that this image fits well with the pop magazine genre, it is quite colourful, the model is centred on the page which would suit being placed on the front cover. Because of the plain background, it would mean that I would have the ability to Photoshop the image to change around the colouring of the background too. It may seem as if this picture is a little cheesy, but I feel that it simply follows the conventions of general pop magazines on the market today. Therefore fulfilling its purpose and being applicable to the correct target audience.
These images once again portray a happy nature of a pop music magazine. I tried to test out different positioning of the model, therefore giving a bit of a variation in terms of the layout. The differentiation would mean that the image would suit the contents page either as one large image, or as a combination of sub images in addition to other pictures. The variation could be used to represent the personality of the artist for the front cover of the magazine or as visual aid in addition to the main story of the magazine.

DPS Draft 4
I believe that this is definitely an improvement from the previous draft. I spent more time on editing the image, and I feel that afterwards, it looks more professional. I added in more imagery and quotations after analysing more conventions of pop music magazines such as 'We love pop'. Also, I tried to split the page with an effect of ripped paper, which is something that seems to work well with the rest of the aspects on the page. However, once again, I think that I need to work on splitting the page into two halves, and maybe completing some experimentation with fonts/colour schemes.
How did I create the masthead of the magazine?
To create the masthead for the magazine, I went through a long process of experimentation with possible names such as beat, tempo ect. But these names didn't feel like effective ones to use. And so, after coming across many, I finally found that 'shuffle' would fit the magazine perfectly as it linked to the idea of music very well. To make the masthead more interesting, I merged a bold font with the shuffle icon with the help of Photoshop and my 'Kanvus' tablet. This made the mast head more appealing for the front cover.
Double Page Spread Draft
This is my first actual attempt at designing the double page spread, I think that the general look of it is pretty appealing and there is a good colour scheme. The only thing that I have a problem with is the main image. I tried to edit the image to create an impression of blurriness, almost as an affect of double vision. However, I don't particularly like how it turned out. As an improvement, I would try to enlarge the image, to make it spread over half of the page. Because this convention is very important for the music magazine
